For the first time, the Civikos Platform and representatives of civil society and social partners from Kosovo participated as Enlargement Candidate Members (ECM) in the Plenary Session of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).
The Civikos Platform was represented at this high-level roundtable on the enlargement of the European Union by Gresa Berisha. As part of its engagement in this function, the Civikos Platform will also participate for the first time in an EESC Study Group, contributing to the drafting of an opinion of the Committee.
During the plenary session, Dren Puka, Executive Director of KCSF and member of the Civikos Platform Board, addressed the session, emphasizing that the success of the enlargement process and the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans depends on the meaningful involvement of civil society and citizens in democratic reforms. He called for the European Union to treat civil society funding as a strategic investment in democracy and reacted to the statement by Serbian Minister Snezhana Paunović, stressing that war rhetoric has no place in an enlargement process based on the values of peace, democracy and accountability.
Involvement in the work of the EESC through the Enlargement Candidate Member initiative creates new opportunities for the voice of Kosovo’s civil society to be part of the European Union’s consultative processes and to contribute to the discussions accompanying the enlargement process.
